take-a-moment tuesday

take-a-moment tuesday

i am so impressed with my last-weekend self, that i have to make a list of the things i accomplished so i can remember how awesome my labor day self was.

  • made and canned salsa
  • made and froze apple sauce
  • made and froze apple butter
  • went to state fair
  • went to canvas and chardonnay and painted something
  • stopped and picked 5-gallon bucket of apples for FREE
  • made and canned pickles
  • cut legs off barstools to make counter stools
  • finished my stephen king book
  • ran 6.2 miles
  • finally got to the farmers’ market
  • convinced nate to buy shoes
  • went to menards, returned some stuff, bought a …
  • protector for the counter above my dishwasher, then installed it
  • made a cauliflower-crust pizza, which was ok but not as awesome as regular pizza

that was a pretty decent list for a 3-day weekend. the only thing that would’ve made it even more awesome is if i’d painted a room or built a deck. another weekend!

busy busy

busy busy

the next week is going to be busy busy. i’m not looking forward to it! i’m actually planning on staying late tomorrow for sure and maybe thursday just so i can make sure i get everything done that needs to be done for the beginning of the school year.
we’ll see if i get around to writing anything of substance in the next few days!

flyin

flyin

it’s august already.
i love fall, but it’s always followed by winter, which lasts forever no matter how long it is. it finally rained, so my garden has gotten a little bit better. there’s just something about a good soaking rain that helps my veggies a million times better than anything a sprinkler can do.
this time of year always makes me a little melancholy. maybe it’s because of all those schoolyears; maybe it’s because i know winter’s only right around the corner. the lull between summertime high and the start of autumn is always a low because i’m not ready for summer to leave yet. but once fall gets here, it’s wonderful (wonderfall??).
i’m hoping the next couple weeks will be full of summertime fun and my veggies decide to make a ripe appearance. maybe i’ll make nate take on a project with me – paint the bedroom? put shelves up in the garage? start roughing out the basement? i’ll be starting to can here in the next couple weeks, which surely signals the end of summer!
i’m sure in the next few weeks i’ll be ready for fall to show up; i seem to always be ready by september. until then, slow down a little bit, summertime.

stuff

stuff

i picked some potatoes from my garden today! i dug and dug and dug and finally ran into to some potatoes. if i only get four potatoes from each plant, i’m in trouble.
i’m taking another blogging break. tomorrow i’ll be at a wedding and i don’t want to have to worry about a blog, so expect me back on saturday (maybe).

soap-making take 2 (and other stuff)

soap-making take 2 (and other stuff)

tomorrow i’m going to try the hot-process soap-making process. it involves cooking the soap in a crockpot for a while, and since i got a crockpot at a garage sale for $1.50, i think i’ll give it a go.
i went for a walk tonight, and it was just the right time to catch the fireflies blinking in the woods and then along the edge of the cornfield. i took everything in me to just look at them and not run around like a goofball and catch a couple.
i made a couple galettes tonight, one for me and one for my dad. unfortunately, galettes are messy business, and the juice from the berries spilled off the cookie sheet and onto the bottom of the oven. i’m cleaning the oven right now and it’s certainly stinky. also, the blackberries in the galettes are kind of gross. 😛 (otherwise, they’re delicious.)
tomorrow i’m going to do my best to get to the farmers’ market in rochester. i say do my best only because if my body wants to sleep until 11:30, i will let it. i am so short on sleep lately it’s not even funny. however, if i do wake up at a reasonable time, i’m looking forward to some market time!

car sold

car sold

nate sold his car. i had sent a note through carsoup to the nissan dealer in rochester, and not even two hours later nate got a call from them.  went in on saturday and they bought it for $13,800. not as much as we’d’ve liked, but nothing to sneeze at. we’ll get rid of a car payment and lose a car’s worth of insurance. the only thing left is to pay off some bills with some cash leftover. hopefully that’ll give us some breathing room.
RIP red nissan coupe! 🙁 you were fast.

aaaaaand i'm back!

aaaaaand i'm back!

back from a blogging break! thank you for keeping it real while i was gone; i know my 5 readers were just chomping at the bit for updates.

conversion camper: year 2 boogaloo
conversion camper: year 2 boogaloo

my vacay was good! a few takeaways:
1. i was on the road one way for 10 hours. the other way 11 hours. that sucked. it’s a long ways out to mandan.
2. we bought bigger fireworks this year. it was awesome. the neighbors had even bigger fireworks, which was even awesomer.
3. sandbarring was good, but it was no lake.
4. i realized i have more of a tradition of going to fireworks with nate than i do of going to mandan, so i will be staying home next year. i’ll need a week off in june for the BLACK HILLS, so i need to save up my vacation time.
5. i should have gotten some medora mints while i could – i was going to go on sunday, but the store where they sold them was closed 🙁
6. never ever ever ever ever stop at the perkins in jamestown ever ever again. we waited an hour to get our food. still haven’t heard back from perkins on twitter (i tweeted the experience).
7. hm, overall i’m glad i went, but it was no derry family reunion. :((((

i meant to video some macaron making, but it totally slipped my mind. 🙁
liz came over and we made two batches of macarons – pistachio and lemon. both are delicious.
tomorrow i’m going to attempt to make soap! i will do my best to photodocument it.
two and a half workdays this week – i took off thursday for the fourth and i worked an additional 4-1/2 hours for the parade on friday. woo!

things

things

1. my printer took a dump right when i got two etsy orders. i had to order the prints online. ugh.
2. making ATK’s “chewy” brownies tonight. they’re in the oven as i type. we’ll see how these turn out, since nate was pretty liberal with following the directions :/ pic and review to come tomorrow.
3. tomorrow i make banana cake with coconut cream cheese frosting for a coworker’s birthday. that’ll be interesting!
4. i’m going to attempt to make soap. i have the lard for it, and i just got some lye at menard’s. now all ineed to do is go to goodwill and get a set of dishes to make it in since you don’t want to mix your eating stuff with soap making stuff.
5. running goal this week: 6 miles. maybe tomorrow or wednesday night, depending on how i sleep. (sleeping has been elusive lately for some reason, and it’s really hitting me hard. ick.)
