aaauuuggghh

my taxes are not filed yet, but after this week i should be able to send them off to uncle sam.
and i am still waffling over which mac to get to replace my 8 year old imac. now i’m wondering if i should get a macbook and just hook it up to a couple monitors if needed. i do hate my current laptop. and then the cheap thing to do would be to just get a mac mini and use my current monitor, keyboard, and mouse. decisions decisions and #firstworldproblems
(and still, at the same time, my current mac works just fine and i don’t REALLY need to replace it… )

slowly but surely

slowly but surely

you may recall: after crappy wireless quality on my ps3, i ran an ethernet cable out to the living room and found my wireless was just crappy, not crappy internet.
running a wire through the house, however, was not viable. it needed to run through the basement where i wouldn’t trip over it. it made sense for the cords to run from cable outlet to cable outlet, but SCARY, amiright?
i wanted to make sure i had the right measurements and general idea of how to go about running a cord through the basement to the living room, so my dad spent an afternoon with me a few weeks ago, and we got the general locations figured out for the holes in the floor to the cable outlet boxes. after some not so successful attempts, we gave up.
today i went back at it, breaking the bottoms out of the cable outlets so i could see what was going on. success! after making the holes a little bigger, i was able to run my drain cleaner thing up the hole from the basement and grab it from the upstairs. i taped the ethernet cord to the end and pulled it down to the basement, then up to the living room.
and because i don’t have the right boxes nor the supplies to make an actually cat5 outlet, i did the ghetto thing and just ran the cord from the bottom of the faceplates. ha! no one will see them anyway.  hooked that bad boy up to my switch, and now my ps3, tv, and xbox are all internet ready. woo!

this is a horrible picture. but in the lower left you can kind of see the cord that’s just hanging out.

hi there

hi there

just a checkin tonight because i don’t have anything for you. i did put some under cabinet lights under the rest of my counter, so now i can see what i’m cooking, but that’s about as exciting as it got today. happy friday!

OLyMPICS!

OLyMPICS!

woo! olympics coverage starts tonight! opening ceremony is tomorrow night! 2 weeks of sports i actually sort of care about!
that said, it’ll be interesting to see all the stuff surrounding this being in russia and the human rights issues, let alone gay rights.

the daily derp

the daily derp

i’ve always wondered if i could exploit ralf’s antics a la grumpy cat, maru, lil bub, etc. he seems to be getting a good reception on my fb feed, so i feel i’m missing an opportunity here.
thedailyderp.com seems to be open for the taking, but then i become one of those specialized bloggers, which i hate. perhaps i should start a daily derp on here? i could make its own little section of the blog. what say you, readers?

i’m putting together something to present to students at student success day on how what they put out on the internet stays on the internet. a couple things, though.
1. i am of the theory that if any employer asks me for my fb/twitter logins, i walk out of the interview.
2. relevant xkcd:

i find it hard to explain how to strike a balance. on the one hand, use some common sense! badmouthing rctc every single day is not going to look that great on your public twitter profile when/if you go in for an interview at rctc. on the other, don’t stifle your opinions, ideas, and identity because your employer wants its hands in your private life.
give me your opinion and ideas. i want to know what you think about internet use and private vs. public info.

one of my “guidelines” for 2014 was to be more musical. well, the other day i went to schmitt music and bought some clarinet reeds. after some poking around in some boxes, i found my clarinet music, and so begins more musicalness in my life.
photofor reasons UNBEKNOWNST TO ME* i have lost my etudes for clarinet, but i still have a lot of sheet music, so i think i’ll be good as far as music goes.
*that was total sarcasm and a lie. i’m sure i got rid of them because they were the bane of my existence during my first semester of college. bruce thornton, you were the worst clarinet teacher i’ve ever had.

backdate

backdate

so i thought i was going to be home by midnight to blog before my technical day was up, but i missed it by about 15 minutes, so i’m backdating and i ain’t even sorry, bros.
went to a superbowl party at liz’s and i ate sooooo muuuuuccchhhh bllllaaaaaaarrrrrggghhhhh. we also made b-kuchen and added a quarter cup of butter, which we think helps keep it a little moister. also we cooked them until they wer *just* done, which our mother rarely does, and that always helps with the moist factor.
so maybe this easter when do kuchen fer realzors, maybe i can convince mom of the extra butter at least. well see how receptive she is to change. :/

cakepops

cakepops

i’ve been meaning to make cakepops for a long, long time. i bought pop sticks probably two years ago, if that’s any indication. in addition to that, i have a coworker who liked february to be the month of love, so i decided to bring some treats in once a week through the month. time to finally make cake pops!
step one: bake a cake. i just used a box cake since i didn’t feel like it would make much difference after they were pop-ified.
step two: make homemade cream cheese frosting because they don’t sell frosting in the store without devil’s syrup. thanks, corn industry.
ingredients
what else do you need? good chocolate (i chose cadbury) for dipping your balls.
step three: put cut up cake in your mixer and beat it to make it crumbly. SO EASY.
cake
step four: add some frosting into your crumbled cake and beat it til it becomes the consistency of what looks like chunky brownie batter.

step five: roll the cake into balls and stick the sticks in them. set them somewhere to freeze up (this is easy this time of year).

step six: melt your chocolate, then dip the frozen cake balls into them. i used a cat scratcher to hold them upright until they cooled down. (it had plastic wrap over it!! calm down!!)
dippedstep seven: i melted some almond bark to dip the tops into and then sprinkled some red and white sprinkles on it for valentine’s month. tada!
