ATK: tiramisu

ATK: tiramisu

tiramisu-recipei offered to make my mom tiramisu for her birthday since we won’t be making any trips to ciatti’s anytime soon 🙁
turns out, tiramisu is relatively easy. the hardest part was finding mascarpone and ladyfingers.
first you make some coffee and stir in some rum to soak the ladyfingers in before laying them nice and neat in a 9×13 pan. then mix up egg yolks, sugar and salt, then add in the 1-1/2 lbs of mascarpone cheese (it’s like cream cheese)

that's $16 worth of mascarpone

whip up some heavy cream and add it to the sugary mascarpone mix. then time to layer!yum
ladyfingersi ran out of ladyfingers 🙁
i may have made a vital mistake while i went to find ladyfingers: i should have put everything in the fridge, but i didn’t think i was going to be that long. the mascarpone breaks down if it gets too warm, and when i came back the remaining mix was a little chunky. 🙁 my lack of foresight on the ladyfinger front may have been my undoing.
tiramisu
either way, it’s got to taste good, right? we’ll find out tomorrow when we eat it for birthday dessert.

fair time already??

fair time already??

fair
the winona county fair is early! i’m used to county fairs in august; to have one in mid-july is pretty intense. so nate and i had to scope it out. we checked out the non-horse animal barns (to prevent anaphylactic shock), made a lap around the midway, strolled through one vendor barn (the one with the GOP station in it – bleah), and took a walk down the food run.
one mediocre corn dog and a stellar bag of tom thumb minidonuts (the only kind) later, we left and deemed it not quite, but almost as good as the benton county fair. and the benton county fair isn’t that great. what put the benton county fair ahead? they have DEEP FRIED CANDY BARS and this one didn’t. get on it, winona!

my vacay was good! a few takeaways:
1. i was on the road one way for 10 hours. the other way 11 hours. that sucked. it’s a long ways out to mandan.
2. we bought bigger fireworks this year. it was awesome. the neighbors had even bigger fireworks, which was even awesomer.
3. sandbarring was good, but it was no lake.
4. i realized i have more of a tradition of going to fireworks with nate than i do of going to mandan, so i will be staying home next year. i’ll need a week off in june for the BLACK HILLS, so i need to save up my vacation time.
5. i should have gotten some medora mints while i could – i was going to go on sunday, but the store where they sold them was closed 🙁
6. never ever ever ever ever stop at the perkins in jamestown ever ever again. we waited an hour to get our food. still haven’t heard back from perkins on twitter (i tweeted the experience).
7. hm, overall i’m glad i went, but it was no derry family reunion. :((((

vacay!

vacay!

ok, ok, i KNOW i said i was blogging every day this year. i think that is a grand plan, and so far i have accomplished that.
HOWEVER.
i want a break.
i’m going to mandan over the fourth of july, and i think i’m going to take a break from blogging for the few days i’m out there. i’ll be leaving thursday and come back sunday, so it’s not like i’ll be gone for weeks and weeks. plus, hopefully, when i come back i’ll have some pictures to share.
so i’m making an executive decision.
time for a blogging break while i go have fun. i’ll try to blog tomorrow night, but after that i make no promises.
