the number 1 spot
i haven’t ever had a ton of friends; the most i’ve ever had was in high school, when i maxed out at maybe 5 good friends. even then, i never really had a “best” friend.
enter college, and my friend list was whittled down to three or four really good friends, depending on when you counted, and a handful of decent friends. again, i never really had a best friend.
as it stands now, i consider my friends list really small – i have two people i consider good friends. of course i have my siblings and work friends, but even though they are friends, they aren’t 100% friends – they are those other designations as well.
again, no one is “best”. after some thought, i realize that i don’t really subscribe to the term “best friend”. what does it mean, anyway? this person is the best at being a friend? this person is the person i like best?
when a gal only has two 100% real friends, it’s hard to put one above the other, especially when they both bring different things to the friend table. if i had friends who were very similar, then it might be easier to label one as the best, but when your friends are different and are a part of and affect your life in different ways, it would be difficult to say one is better than the other. i like them both for different reasons. they are the best at different parts of being my friend.

ok, ok, i KNOW i said i was blogging every day this year. i think that is a grand plan, and so far i have accomplished that.
HOWEVER.
i want a break.
i’m going to mandan over the fourth of july, and i think i’m going to take a break from blogging for the few days i’m out there. i’ll be leaving thursday and come back sunday, so it’s not like i’ll be gone for weeks and weeks. plus, hopefully, when i come back i’ll have some pictures to share.
so i’m making an executive decision.
time for a blogging break while i go have fun. i’ll try to blog tomorrow night, but after that i make no promises.
HOME INVASION
last night i was nice and comfily asleep, lost in land of zzz’s when out of the corner of my dream-state hearing i note a weird cat noise.
eh, nothing of it. back to zzz land. nate, however, gets up and investigates. suddenly:
“KATE” – i look at the clock. it’s 3:30 a.m.
he runs into the bedroom, throws on the light. “the front door is wide open! that black stray cat was inside and i nearly pooped* my pants! ralf’s missing!”
i jumped out of bed, threw on sweatpants and sweatshirt, and hurried outside. chasey was patrolling the entryway like a cat sargeant, and i thought i saw sophie out of the corner of my eye.
grabbed flashlights on the way out and started calling for ralf. it wasn’t a long search – nate found him halfway to the intersection and hauled him inside. his tail was poofy but still curled up like a pig’s tail; it made for a weird combination.
no sign of sophie, so we did a house search for her, and she was under the bed, hiding.
so, i tried to get back asleep but was all keyed up, and i probably didn’t get back to actual sleep until probably 4:30-5.
i woke up for the morning groggy and headachey, but hauled myself out of bed. sophie, who normally is all up in my grill in the mornings, was nowhere to be seen (still under the bed).

today, i came home, and the first thing nate yelled when i walked in the door was HOME INVASION. chasey had puked on the bed twice during the day and was making attempts to puke all day. ralf was back to his usual dopey self. sophie was out from under the bed, and she hopped up in my lap. i started petting her, when i noticed a clot of somethingĀ above her left eye. she had a gouge above her eye and a scratch below her eye: that stray cat almost took sophie’s eyeball out.

snow days 2
i have a widget in wordpress that pops up relevant blog posts at the end of each post. on yesterday’s post, this one popped up: snow.
in it, i lament the lack of snow in 2011 and 2012 (and the drought, as well as cold temps. where is this minnesota i keep hearing about? basically i was whining because it wasn’t cold enough or snowy enough and i wanted to uphold my tough minnesota status.
well, well, well, JOKE’S ON ME!
this winter started so early and has been so overwhelmingly minnesotan that we are all just aching for spring to show up even though it’s still february and spring generally doesn’t show up until at least the end of march around these parts.
the good news? it’s pretty out. i’d much rather look at a white, crisp, snowy landscape than dead brown grass. also, we’re probably no longer in a drought. thirdly, (hopefully) any nasty pest bugs will have frozen this winter and will leave our trees alone.
the bad news? i hate the cold. but cold is cold, so i just bundle up and deal. i also want to plant stuff, but i run into this dilemma every year around this time.

1. sherlock was awesome! i don’t want to say much without spoilers, but there were some funny moments and i’m excited for next week!
i hate the fact that i can get all basic channels excpet NBC through my antenna. i think i’m going to get the largest indoor antenna i can find and see if it works. i want to get the olympics in HD!
3. tomorrow’s back to work. i could get used to this 3-day weekend thing though.
4. i dressed up my christmas tree star before putting my stuff away for the season. the first year i got a tree, i had some branches and made a star from them. it just looks a little boring, so i made it sparkly!
long weekend!
i feel like i haven’t worked at all lately! i had christmas, then new year’s, then a cold day, and now MLK day next week. next month i get president’s day. then a couple months and it’s memorial day!
all the holidays? INGENIOUS! this is something i definitely will take over the private work sector. screw you, only 7 paid holidays a year!

summer’s almost over š i love fall, but winter just sucks. although this winter nate and i are hopefully looking at buying a house and moving. i’m excited for what we might find in regards to some acreage. we’ll see what happens. i’m tired of living on a busy corner.

famous footwear was having one of their buy one get one half off sales along with a 20% off coupon. i got these and nate’s skate shoes for work for $107. considering these shoes alone were $110, i’d say i got a pretty good deal!

FINALLY i am able call up my sisters and be like, “hey. want to go to the moa?” and they will both be able to say, uh, sure! woo!
went to the moa yesterday where i found a fabulous hat (pictured). then jane’s housewarming party was happening, so we went there and a good time was had by all! (except hannah at times – it was a new and strange place.)
i am 2 lbs. away from -60 lbs. i have taken progress pics every -10 lbs since -30 lbs. should i post (gross, half-naked) pictures of myself once i get to -60?
