someday sunday

someday sunday

i’m not one to hold a lot of stock in long-term plans. i hate those interview questions where they ask you where you see yourself in 5 years; i know you’re supposed to say something about how you’ll be with the company and moving up and professional development, blah blah blah, but my answer is always more deviant than they’d like. i always say something to the effect that i don’t like making long-term plans because you never know what will happen tomorrow, let alone the next five years. there are so many variables to life that a long-term plan is not something i place a lot of stock in.
which is REALLY weird, because i’m a planner. i enjoy making lists, plans, itineraries for vacations. i like to stick to the plan. when something goes awry or differently than the plan, i try to go with the flow, but it’s a little difficult at times.
when there IS a plan. if it’s my thing, there’s a plan. if it’s other people’s, i tend to go more with the flow and the changing ebbs and tides of their plans.
but i still like a plan. a short-term plan.
so someday sunday is not something i’d necessarily write about, but i take my readers’ suggestions when i can, and jane came up with this one.
i have an idea of places i’d like to go eventually, when time and money permit. one of those places is machu picchu. i think it’s fascinating to have an abandoned city in the high mountains of peru. i’d like to go and see what it was like, experience the south american culture a little bit, and just get out of this country.
i mean, how could this not appeal to people?
16641625
getting there is always the problem. generally, when i decide to do something, i’ll do it, so at this point, i just need to say: ok. in 4/5/6/7 years, i’ll go to machu picchu.
the thing with big vacations for me is that i will always be looking more to the small vacations because i like what i know. and the smaller vacays are easier to do. packing up to go to the black hills for a week is a lot less expensive that going abroad. getting to a lake for four days during the summer will always be something i do. and at this point, it’s not time that’s the issue; it’s money. i could stop spending money on the little things to save up for the big things, but the little things are a lot more helpful to my instant gratification problem.*
at this point in my life, i have to take a step back and think: is this REALLY something i need or want to do, or would i rather stuff this $50 away to go to a place i’ve never been and want to go? i have everything i need, really. it’s just the allure of stuff. so maybe i need a realignment of thinking. we’ll see if i can work on that.
*interesting side note: people who have last names that begin with a letter toward the end of the alphabet have more problems dealing with instant gratification than those with letters toward the beginning. and this is all rooted in childhood, so no, moving up in the alphabet with a married name won’t help you at all. think about all those years of being at the back of the line while the Bs, Ds, Ms, Ts, Us, Vs, etc. all go ahead of you. i was the last in line all through gradeschool. sure, we rotated, but the first day of school, i was always last. one article here about this

word..friday….?

word..friday….?

so i was going to do a foodie friday, but i’ve been at conference the past couple days and the food, while good, was not made by me. i suppose i could review it quickly, but i want to do a reprise of word wednesday but on a friday.
thursday: we had a mexican food bar for lunch then headed to tin whiskers for supper, which is actually just a brewery. so i had a beer there, and the system office ordered in black sheep pizza, which was really good! i would like to go to black sheep and just get a bunch of pizza. after we left, i walked to keys cafe and got a piece of pumpkin pie, which was delicious.
that was the interesting food.

word break

let’s talk about what’s happening this weekend: daylight saving time. note: daylight saving time. NO S.
daylight savings is a misspelling. i’m sorry that you’ve been saying it wrong all this time, but it’s time to switch it back. drop that S! i checked why we use the S, and it’s guessed that it’s because it’s used in everyday speech like savings account. so, check the S. it’s not supposed to be there.
this weekend is the big fall back day, so check your non-phone clocks! we get an extra hour of sleep, but we also lose an hour of light at the end of the day, so that bums me out. welcome, SAD!
(contrary to popular opinion, i LOVE DST. i love the extra light at the end of the workday, the 9:30 p.m. sunsets. sorry, whiny celebrities on twitter. that’s the way it is.)

throwback thurs!

throwback thurs!

generally i want my throwback thursdays to be more of a reminisce thursday, but i think i need to take a moment and throwback just one year, when i was gearing up to head out to california
it doesn’t seem like it’s been almost a year since jane and i went to california. what a great time!
the first day we were there, we went to universal studios and HARRY POTTER WORLD.
screen-shot-2016-11-07-at-8-50-08-pm
i don’t know if i’ve been this happy since! what a great time. we had some butter beer, got wands, tried to go on a ride successfully (successfully in jane’s case and unsuccessfully in mine), ate at the three broomsticks, and immersed ourselves into potter culture. it was glorious.
so i literally JUST got a text message from jane:Screen Shot 2017-11-02 at 7.03.38 PM
(seriously, i was finishing up my above paragraph and my phone buzzed.)
the day after HP world, jane and i went to sequoia national park just north of LA. it was also election day, and the world seemed so bright and unsullied… but i digress. we headed to hertz and picked up our rental care – a convertible! and headed north. we spent the day driving, but that was ok. we got into the san joaquin valley, and it was almost otherworldly (think post-apocalyptic). sequoia was great. we saw some big trees, drove through the park and got some great pine-y smells, and saw general sherman, which is the largest tree by volume.
img_2835
the sunset that evening was great as we came down the mountain, with some mist in the foothills. on the way home we tried out in-n-out, which decided was not better than 5 guys.
the third day was my favorite day! we took out convertible car and drove up and down the coast on hwy 1. there was so much win with this day. the ocean was great, the breeze was great, the salt smell, the bright sun, the beach. the RVs on the side of the road lined up for miles and surfers out in the waves trying their best to surf, the palm trees, the waves splashing up rock outcroppings, the mountains sloping up on the east side of the road, the grand houses we saw as we drove into the LA area, the santa monica pier in the evening with the sun sinking into the ocean, and the drive back up over a mountain with the whole of LA spread out in the valley with lights as far as the eye could see, and the drive back to the hotel on ventura boulevard with specialty storefronts for miles and miles, and jane’s one navigational mistake of the day as she missed the turn into our hotel parking lot.
img_2998
on day four, we had no idea what we were going to do, but ended up doing a bus tour of LA, which was more fun than i thought it would be. we stopped at the chinese theater and checked out the sidewalk of stars. we sat on top of the bus and saw beverly hills, fancy cars, and out-of-place christmas decorations. saw the hollywood sign and had a general good time. i think the best part of the day was when we were the only ones on the bus, and our driver had to pull over to tell us to put our seatbelts on while we were on the freeway.
img_1467
our last full day in california was kind of a rest day. highlights of the day included me biffing it on the pool deck in front of everyone, leaving the outdoor pool because i was chilly and finding out it was 80º, eating at an authentic mexican restaurant where jane had the best burrito of her life, and me trying to pack everything back up (she died like she lived: packing her suitcase).

return day was depressing. the shuttle there was quicker and less angry than the shuttle when we flew in. we had an excellent beer at the airport bar, got on the plane, and flew back home. we WERE pleasantly surprised by the spacious freeway lanes when we got home. so much room!
i want to go back! but to visit.
because i’ll tell you what: as much as i loved being in california and the weather in november and the ocean, it doesn’t hold a candle to paddling on lake sagatagan on a windless june evening among the pines and oaks and aspen, feet in the water, with loons calling to each other across the water.

word wednesday: steal your thunder

word wednesday: steal your thunder

welcome, KABLPOMO! it’s word wednesday, so let’s get our etymology on!
today’s phrase: steal one’s thunder. we’ve all run into a person who’s done this. we’re doing our thing, then someone else comes along and takes it away and uses it as their own. but where did it come from?
back in the early 1700s, this playwright named john dennis wrote a play that was produced in london. he also invented a new way of creating the sound of thunder for the play (there were many methods).
the play, unfortunately, was unsuccessful  and closed. the thunder-creating method was NOT unsuccessful. soon after, it was used in a production of macbeth. apparently mr. dennis was a little perturbed by this, saying that they had “stolen his thunder”. his response was recorded, and we’ve been using it ever since!

kablpomo

we are closing in on kablpomo. here’s my idea: day of the week corresponds to a theme, and right now i have two figured out.
foodie friday

any other ideas from my readers?

so productive!

so productive!

this weekend was SO PRODUCTIVE i could just puke rainbows and glitter*.
i took down the crappy 90s medicine cabinet in my bathroom, sanded up the weird spots, painted the walls “olive” (it’s more like light moss green), and put up new towel racks and a mirror that i spray-painted off white. now it’s like a new bathroom, and i don’t hate the maple cabinetry in there. i might leave it.
befre-after-bath
pulled out my fall decor and finally set it out. i think the leaves outside finally prompted me to get moving on that; it’s been pretty green here lately until just a couple days ago. sure, the maples turned two weeks ago or so, but everything else held onto their chlorophyll pretty good. then suddenly, it was like every deciduous tree decided to just turn a little yellow overnight, and suddenly it’s fall. and suddenly, i’m ok with it being fall. i’m not looking forward to 92 months of winter, but i will enjoy the 2-3 weeks of fall we get before heading down that route.
the weather was great this weekend. both days were upper 60s and sunny, so yesterday i spent some quality time in the hammock while my paint was drying, then today i picked a lot of stuff out of my garden and then went for a fantastic run this evening. i’ve got a ton of pie pumpkins to cook up and some squash, a few tomatoes, and a ton of basil to do something with. in other news, we’re expecting a frost tonight, so it was time to clear out everything that isn’t winter hardy (the brussels sprouts will be ready soon! they’re always better after a couple frosts).
in other news, i need to mow my lawn.
i went to pier 1 this afternoon and FINALLY bought a new set of plates. i’ve been waffling over new plateware for three years. i found a great-looking set on amazon for cheapo, but it came with those dumb flat soup bowls (who uses those?) and got horrible reviews (apparently they are prone to chipping). so i headed over to pier 1 and found a set on clearance. picked up all the dinner plates, salad plates, and two bowls. i’m going to check online to see if i can find at least two more bowls.
now it’s time for some t-bone steak and mashed cauliflower (that’s nate’s choice).
the only thing that would have made this weekend super duper awesome is if the sun were out another hour and a half and i could go spend some time on the SUP at st. john’s. it might be time to deflate it.  D;
*herpes of the craft world
OMG kablpomo is fast approaching. ideas welcome!

how to go to a ragnar!

how to go to a ragnar!

“run the ragnar,” liz said. “it’ll be fun,” liz said.
well, she was right. it was fun, despite my complaining and the ankle issue and the heat.
the 9-mile forest is four hours from my house, so i left after work on thursday to head over into the cheese state of wisconsin. i chose to go the slightly longer route because of rush hour, and in doing so, wondered if everyone in the state of wisconsin drives 50 in a 55.
i got to the campground just as dusk was settling in, and the line of cars to get in was not too long (not as long as when liz had come earlier that day).
the logistics of driving in and out was a little odd, but i made it to my drop off point, where i dropped all my gear and liz and lindsay picked it up. then i drove a windy road two miles east and parked in a giant field. (and somehow got away with not paying for parking!)
there was a shuttle back to the campground, then i hopped out.

  1. portapotties everywhere. there were lines of them in various places all over the event, and they got cleaned out regularly. they ran out of TP more than once, so a couple times i went i had to BYOTP. but generally, i was impressed with the toilet situation
  2. the runners’ village was packed and hot. this is where the runners’ station was, where the teams relayed in and out, and there was a coffee/hot chocolate station as well. you could buy beer, pizza, sandwiches, gear, and visit the medic tent (which i did).
  3. the tenting was like none i’d seen before! each team had a 20’x20′ space to put all their tents and gear. liz scored a spot that was a little farther out from the noise, so it was a little bit of hike, but well worth it. the tenting situation was a good way to figure out what sort of tent a person should buy, that’s for sure! and to see the different setups was really cool. one team brought a rug, others brought comfy chairs, some brought hammocks, one team had one of those projection lights that threw fairy lights into the trees.
  4. the tattoos were awesome. i loved seeing all the leg tattoos.
  5. shirts were also awesome (including my “running sucks” and “but did you die though” shirts). i liked this one:
    il_570xN.1259384306_57ck
  6. the trees, the trees. i just like hanging out in the trees.
  7. the energy. there’s something about hanging out with 2000 people who are there for the same reason you are. we are all commiserating with each other over the heat and the lack of TP, then telling each other to make sure to try the pizza and to carb up.

and then like that – – it’s done. you’ve beaten dehydration and lived through a mild injury, and it’s time to go home.
the leaving process was much more frantic and weird than coming in. maybe it’s because we’re all tired and ready to be done. but we hauled all our stuff down to the drop off site, then a few of our people started walking toward the parking lot instead of waiting in the 100 people+ line for the shuttle. they got picked up by some people heading that way and drove back to pack it all up and head home.
and then it was a four-hour drive home after getting 10 hours of sleep in the last 48 hours and sitting in my own stinky sweat for just as long. but there’s a sense of satisfaction for having done what others call crazy: for training for the run and then getting another race under my belt.
and so i washed off the sweat as soon as i got home, standing under my hot shower for as long as i could stand. then lying down on my bed was the highlight of my month. and now i’m sitting here a week later, waiting for my ankle to move past the pain point so i can get out on the trail again while the temperatures hold and the light maintains.
until next year.
