democratic prez potentials

democratic prez potentials

it all comes down to this question:
are americans more racist? or more sexist?
personally, after reading MANY backwoods comments on the SC Times messageboard and perusing fark convos, i think a black man has a better chance of becoming president than a white woman.

to vote! in a week, the polls will be open, and you, yes YOU will be expected to do your civic duty! so vote!
now, for those of you in MN who think you’re like-minded with me, i have done some research on the gubernatorial race (that’s governor to you). i think pawlenty slashed way too much, and mike hatch has some flip-flopping issues that he needs to deal with (not to mention his position on video games).
so, i’m voting independent.
peter hutchinson is the independent candidate for governor, and here’s what i especially like about him:
“Politics is broken by close-minded partisanship that has paralyzed our government. Most partisan politicians say they are ‘for’ schools, roads, health care or the environment but focus their energies on the threat posed by the ‘other side’ on the 5Gs: guns, gays, God, gambling, and gynecology. On every issue, and especially the 5Gs, the partisan extremes have made enemies of those they disagree with. They have used fear to divide us from our friends, neighbors and community. As a result we have lost sight of the common sense core that connects us. We have been voting our fears and are only more afraid. It’s time to claim our independence from close-minded politics and fear.”
not only that, BUT, he has a plan for the issues that he does think are important. at the bottom of each of his “issues” pages, there is a link to a PDF with a plan. now that’s a guy i can vote for.

a little commentary

a little commentary

http://news.yahoo.com/s/thenation/20061025/cm_thenation/1131964
taken from the above article
michael j fox is appearing in commercials for democratic senate potentials that promote embryonic stem cell research because he’s got parkinson’s disease, and one of the theories is that stem cell research will hopefully provide answers and solutions to not only parkinson’s, but alzheimer’s and other diseases.
so, in response:
“Rush Limbaugh and other right-wing commentators who once trashed Wellstone are now attacking Fox. Limbaugh has gone so far as to claim that the actor “is exaggerating the effects of the disease,” while claiming that the commercials are “purely an act.”
why on earth would anyone exaggerate the effects of parkinson’s. limbaugh has obviously never met a person with parkinson’s disease. my aunt colette has parkinson’s and without her pills, the disease just takes over: her limbs flail about and her mental capabilities just aren’t all there. even with her pills she has these problems. it slowly eats at the mind, and people around the afflicted suffer as well, watching this disease take over a life.
anyone questioning the effects of a disease needs to have their head examined and needs to spend a day in a nursing home or home care situation.

happy lucrative anniversary

happy lucrative anniversary

over the past five years, we’ve gone from a country in shock, to one of overzealous religiousness and patriotism to one of cynicism of the current administration. but, on the fifth anniversary, now the trend is, “how much money can i make from this?”
but a mere five years after planes flew into the WTC, we are inundated with gold commemorative coins, major motion pictures, a network documdrama with an agenda, not to mention the million other things that i, as a minnesotan and not a new yorker, am probably not exposed to.
why all of a sudden are we seeing people trying to make money out of tragedy? much like people needing an excuse to becoming more patriotic or religious, now we are seeing the excuse for making money. why so soon? are they trying to make money while the facts are still seared in our minds rather than 20 years down the line, when things might get a little fuzzy? “saving private ryan,” 50 years after the fact, was still as powerful.
but perhaps they are trying to educate. let me be the first to inform you – you can get educational 9/11 pieces on the discovery, history, or national geographic channels all the time. i have watched them and have no problem with them because they have no real agenda BUT to educate. movies in theaters with big-budget actors? a “drama” focused on 9/11 with possible claims of libel? a “commemorative” coin made with silver from the WTC site? there is nothing but the sound of money clinking in these people’s pockets. for shame.

a slippery slope!

a slippery slope!

i think if consenting adults want to be married in the government’s eyes, so be it. call it a civil union. leave it up to the churches which ones want to actually perform a marriage between gay people.
but, here is my question, and i pose it because i’m not sure exactly how i stand on it. what about polygamy? what’s to stop consenting adults from being polygamous? i know it’s illegal now, but given the “slippery slope” people always talk about with gay marriage, that is the ONLY “what’s next?” scenario i see as plausible. convince me which way i should sway on polygamy.

votey vote vote

votey vote vote

next presidential election, i’m voting green. yes, green party.
that is, unless, al gore runs democrat (or maybe he’ll run green?).
he is adamant about something that i truly have strong convictions about: the environment. i’ve believed global warming is happening since 3rd grade. my family recycled all their lives. i feel bad when i let water run. i take quick showers. if i had the money, i would buy a hybrid or E85 vehicle, not for the gas savings (because there isn’t that much, if any), but for the lower emissions.
i don’t care about those stupid wedge issues. i am not a wedge voter. gay marriage and abortion? pfft. i don’t really care. the gay thing will work itself out, and no one will really put an end to abortion (not republicans; if they finally make it illegal, they’ll never win another election). i care about a) the environment and b) funding for poor people.
if i had the money, i would see an inconvenient truth in the theaters, but i’m going to wait til it comes out on dvd. i hear it’s a great movie. recently, there was a special on the discovery channel about global warming, and they said in the documentary that up to 2000, there was doubt among scientists about global warming, but now almost every expert is on board; there is undeniable proof. what they had to say kind of scared me. they had pictures of glaciers in glacier park from the early-mid 1900s that are now completely melted.
sure, you may think that it still doesn’t exist. i respect that. i think you’re wrong, but you can think that.
i think if dems have a chance at all in the next election, it has to be someone who will truly make a difference about something instead of hemming and hawing. come on mr. gore!! he has a better chance of winning than hillary in 2008.

question

question

does anyone know why israel is the US’s love child? why do we keep giving them money and bombs and stuff when they are creating a war?

a few thoughts

a few thoughts

on illegal (or legal) immigration. mostly talking about the hispanics who are quickly becoming a large part of the country.
first of all, there is no official language in this country. i agree that the majority of people speak english, but we can’t “force” anyone to learn a language in a country that doens’t HAVE an official language. my prediction is that in the next 50 yrs or so, there will be a close tie between english and spanish speakers. and ya know what? i know both languages, so i’m not gonna complain.
second, the republicans are never going to enforce illegal immigrants. why? because hispanic immigrants vote republican. they are devout catholic people, and they will vote republican because of that long-lived wedge issue, abortion.
third, i don’t care if there are illegal immigrants in this country. i don’t care if there are legal hispanics in this country. the first people to arrive were “illegal” immigrants. we are ALL immigrants. native americans even descended from people who walked over the arctic bridge (or artic. i don’t know which). so get over yourself. everyone descended from an immigrant of some sort. to want to throw them out is hypocrtical.
BUT these immigrants aren’t going to get anywhere by waving the mexican flag during protests. you don’t see me walking around waving my german flag, because i’m an american. i value my german heritage, and love bratwurst and sauerkraut, but i’m not going to go around yelling about my right as a german-american to what other people have. so, seriously, if they want to be taken seriously, they should start waving an american flag while wearing fiesta gear or cinco de mayo skeletor costumes. HOWEVER….on st patrick’s day, the irish wave irish flags and stuff; but this isn’t a holiday, this is a protest to make american citizens see your point.
fourth, let them stay.

feminism

feminism

ok, you all know me, i’m all feminist. i’m all for equal rights of women, i’m all for a guy cooking for me and staying home with the kids. but i’m not dumb, some women WANT to do this, and if this is what they want, so be it. that’s their choice.
anywho, the rest of this post will be slightly reversing my thoughts on feminism.
i’m taking a diversity class for my grad program. basically, we’re understanding how white males hold power and if they don’t hold power and are beginning to lose it, they start radio programs like rush limbaugh where they make fun of all minorities and those . understood.
also, we are understanding how each culture is not to melted together and not homogenized and each culture should be celebrating their differences, and not have to submit to the power of white males. understood.
ok, now here’s the point of post:
in a society where we should all embrace our heritage and cultures and be who we are, why are females (feminazis in particular) hell-bent on being all mannish? shouldn’t we embrace that difference just like we embrace our cultures and heritage? so what if some women are more inclined to stay in the home, that is a cultural difference and acceptable.
